Ashutosh Gowariker is no stranger when it comes to epic film making. The Director of Lagaan and Jodha Akbar is preparing a film about the Chittagong armoury raid of 1930.
According to Hindustan Times the screenplay for Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey will be based on Manini Chatterjee's bengali literary award winning novel; Do or Die: The Chittagong Uprising:1930 -1934. The film will tell the story of the 1930's revolutionary freedom fighters that attempted to raid the armoury of police forces in Chittagong, a province that was a part of British India. Chittagong is now in Bangladesh. Masterda Surya Sen Lead the Chittagong Uprising of 1930The attempt was lead by Surya Sen, nicknamed Masterda. He believed that to gain freedom for India it was necessary to take up arms against the British Raj. Surya Sen joined the movement for Indian Independence as a strict follower of Mahatma Gandhi's non co-operative movement of 1919. After the Chauri Chaura incident, where 23 police officers were killed when a nationalist mob claiming to be supporters of Gandhi set fire to a police station, Mahatma Gandhi decided to call off the movement. Surya Sen and his followers were unhappy about this decision and decided on their own authority that a armed attack against the British authority was needed. This lead to them planning an armed attack on the Chittagong armoury, police headquarters and European club. On 18th April 1930, the revolutionaries took down the telephone and telegraph communication systems, caused a major disruption to the railway network and killed military and government officials in the European Club. The people killed were supporters of the British Raj. After the incident Surya Sen and his men went into hiding, taking shelter in the hills outside Chittagong. A few days later the police forces located and surrounded the revolutionaries. This resulted in a gunfight with the death of most of the police officers and some of Surya Sen's men. According to Manini Chatterjee;s novel Surya Sen, together with some of his close contemporaries escaped unharmed and fled to West Bengal. Then three years later Surya Sen was captured and sentenced to death by the British lead courts. He was hanged on 12th January 1934.
