The story is not out of the ordinary or unpredictable, but Love Aaj Kal is new-age Indian romance that is different from most of its Bollywood counterparts.

It is hard to believe that this is Deepika Padukone's only third film. She is natural with the camera and fits perfectly into her character of an independent, snooty, and a know-it-all girl. She is born to be an actress. Saif Ali Khan also plays his character with conviction and proves that he can still entertain the audience. Both form a charming pair with their beautiful smiles and have great chemistry in spite of their age difference. Rishi Kapoor is a wonderful actor who plays the lovestruck older man with perfect elan. The biggest surprise? There is a Brazilian model in this movie!

What Is Love Aaj Kal All About?

The movie goes back and forth between 1965 and 2005. Rishi Kapoor (Veer Singh) describes his notion of love with his story in 1965. He is lovestruck when he sees Harleen for the first time. He believes that love is about winning the girl over and doing whatever it takes to be with her. Saif Ali Khan plays Jai, a playboy who does not want to be tied down. He believes that love is about having fun and is fine with one-night stands.

Deepika Padukone plays Meera who is beautiful, knows she is beautiful, and also knows that guys wants her because she is beautiful. When Jai compliments her on her smile, she says that she knows that it creates magic. Soon, both become a couple, but do not believe in getting carried away by love. So even though both are attracted toward one another, they decide to go their separate ways when Meera goes to Delhi. Jai believes that romance is only in the novels. He pursues Meera to the airport on the insistence of Veer Singh, but still does not tell her how he feels. Meera starts dating her boss in India and Jai dates another girl. They remain in-touch and both cannot forget each other.

Giselle Monteiro-Brazilian Model in an Indian Film

The surprise element in the movie is that Harleen is played by a Brazilian model, Giselle Monteiro. She plays the salwar-kameez clad Punjabi girl flawlessly. Even an Indian will not be able to say that Harleen is played by a foreigner. “Giselle came to me to play Jo, Saif’s Caucasian girlfriend in the second-half," says director Imtiaz Ali. "She wasn’t right for Jo. But my wife who was there suggested Giselle for Harleen. I turned and looked at Giselle and realised she is Brazil’s Harleen. She didn’t know how to speak Hindi. But she had only two lines to speak, which we dubbed.”

Buy the DVD, don't go to the theater!

Love Aaj Kal is a fresh take on romance for Indian standards because it does not depict romance as a fairy tale. There are hardly any elaborate dances or costumes. The director attempts to narrate a love story as it is amongst today's generation where each one lives for the day. The movie is youthful and fresh, but not amazing or out of this world. Watch it for a girls night in or with a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate.
