Released in 1990, the blockbuster remains one of the highest grossing Bollywood flims to date.

Maine Pyaar Kiya was made in an age when Hindi movies were essentially fairy tales. It has lilting melodies by Lata Mangeshkar and SP Balasubramanium.

Friends First

Suman (Bhagyashree) is a motherless young woman brought up by her doting father (Alok Nath). The father is a simple villager who is given an opportunity to go abroad and make money. He decides to leave his daughter with one of his old friends Kishen for a few months.

Suman gets along well with the rest of the household, especially with Kishen's son Prem (Salman Khan). The two become firm friends, after Suman successfully protects Prem from parental disapproval after his escapades. However their acquaintances cast aspersions when the two start going out in public together. It is then that Prem realizes that he has become protective of Suman, and in the process falls in love with her.

Prem's mother is favorably inclined toward the young girl, but Kishen sternly disapproves of Suman as a would be daughter in law. He would rather marry his son off to a rich society girl. He refuses to consent to their marriage, and insults Suman's father when he returns, calling them a pair of opportunists.

His old friend is deeply hurt, and takes Suman back home. However Prem refuses to give up and follows Suman back to her village. He proceeds to make her father relent and win her hand in marriage.

Boy Meets Girl, Rich Versus Poor

There is little that the script or storyline has to offer, but that did not stand in the way of its success. It created a fairy tale out of a simple story. Some of the sequences are still remembered for their originality and freshness

  • The pigeon flying away into the skies, carrying love letters from one lover to another. The idea was likely inspired by the pre postal age practice of using pigeons as carriers.
  • The Antakshari sequence. Antakshari is a popular musical game played in the Indian subcontinent, when opponent teams have to sing songs, and the song must start with the last letter of the last song sung by the opponent
  • Suman's early morning birthday celebration song and dance sequence.

It introduced debutantes Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, and in the process bestowed a superstar on the Bollywood scene. While Bhagyashree faded away from the public eye, Salman Khan went to on to produce hit films for two decades (Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, HDDCS), the latest being the action thriller Wanted.

  • Released in: 1990
  • Directed by: Sooraj Barjatya
  • Starring: Salman Khan, Bhagyashree
  • Music: Ram Laxman
  • Run time: 193 mins
