in Wake Up Sid, new director Ayan Mukherji (a cousin of film star Rani Mukherji) directs two stars with contrasting looks and personalities.

Wake Up Sid Preview, Synopsis and Storyline

The story has an interesting premise and may turn out to be an entertaining comedy. Ranbir plays Sid, an easy going college youth and Konkona an ambitious career minded woman who comes to Mumbai in search of work. Ironically she finds her first friend in the lazy, sleepy and fun loving Sid. He spends his days eating, sleeping, going for long drives and attending parties. His life revolves around his friends, his car and camera.

He has little sense of responsibility and no clue as to what direction his life is headed. Sid has scant interaction with his TV serial watching mother and he thinks he is entitled to his hard working father's money, until his life undergoes a drastic change at exam time.

Ranbir's Kapoor's Third Release after Saawariya and Bachna Ae Haseeno

His acting debut, the much hyped Sanjay Leela Bansali directed Saawariya opposite costar and friend Sonam Kapoor was rejected by the critics and the audience. However Ranbir's performance was lauded. His next role, a commitment wary young bachelor with a string of girlfriends in Bachna Ae Haseeno, was also appreciated and met with better commercial success.

Konkona Sen Sharma needs no introduction as a fairly established artiste renowned for her acting skills. She has several noteworthy performances to her credit, such as Life in a Metro, Mr and Mrs Iyer, Page 3 and Laaga Chunri Mein Daag.

Anupam Kher and Supriya Pathak play supporting roles as Sid's parents.

Music is by the trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy ( of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Dil Chahta Hai fame).

A Karan Johar/Dharma Production and UTV Motion Pictures Release

Karan Johar is one of India's foremost young directors, with blockbuster hits Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. He overcame his K fixation with last year's hit Dostana. His Dharma Productions also has the Shahrukh Khan - Kajol starrer My Name is Khan in the offing.

Competition from Recent Releases

Wake Up Sid will face little competition from last week's release What's Your Rashee? Critical reviews have not been encouraging, and one critic Taran Adarsh described it as a 'king sized disappointment'. Dil Bole Hadippa also has fallen after the opening weekend. However Salman Khan's action thriller Wanted is still going strong at the box office.
